The last weekend the Monseñor Romero wall paint that was in the international airport from El Salvador, the one who has the same same name International airport Monseñor Romero from El Salvador was destroyed and now there is just a blue wall with the phrase “Bienvenidos a la tierra del surf , los volcanes y del café / Welcome to El Salvador the surf city, volcanos and coffee”.

This paint wall was painted by Rafael Varela a salvadorian artist recodniced by his realistic paints. The Monseñor Romero wall paint was in the airport since 2010, and this one was recogniced by the cultura secretary like a cultural property in 2012. The Monseñor Romero wall paint conteined historical images of the legacy of El Salvador´s first saint.

A lot of people, organizations and members of the catholic church expressed their discontent because this is not the first time that the current goverment has tried to erase the historical memory from El Salvador. Monseñor Romero has the repect of many salvadorians and the legacy that he did is something that can´t be erase so easely.

The Monseñor Romero wall paint was relocated inside the same International Airport of El Salvador, after its removal was criticized by the salvadoran socity for trying to destroy the historical memory of El Salvador.  The rain of criticism in social networks when they changed the wall paint was really strong, to the point that a U.S congressman came out to question this action of the government so the president said that “El Salvador is a sovereign nation and we will exhibit our works of art wherever we see fit”. 

The Monseñor Romero wall paint is now housed in the airport´s art museum. We can see this as an example of how the goverment try to delete our history memory but if folks are united and strong and also demand that thess pieces of history be protected, then the pressure can make a difference, and our demands can be heard by those who have the power to change such decisions.

El fin de semana la pintura mural Monseñor Romero que se encontraba en el aeropuerto internacional de El Salvador el cual lleva el mismo nombre: Aeropuerto Internacional Monseñor Romero de El Salvaodr fue destruida y ahora solo queda una pared azul con la frase “Bienvenidos a la tierra del surf, los volcanes y del café”

Este mural fue pintado por Rafael Verala, un artista salvadoreño reconocido por sus pinturas realistas. La pintura mural de Monseñor Romero estuvo en el aeropuerto desde 2010 y esta fue reconocida por la secretaria de cultura como un bien cultural en 2012. La pintura mural de Monseñor Romero contenía imagénes históricas del legado del primer santo de El Salvador.

Muchas personas, organizaciones y miembros de la igleasia católica expresaron su descontento porquye no es la primera vez que el gobierno actual intenta borra la memoria histórica de El Salvador. Monseñor Romero tiene el respeto de muchos salvadoreños y el legado que ha dejado es algo que no se puede borrar tan fácilmente.

La pintura mural Monseñor Romero fue reubicada dentro del mismo aeropuerto internacional de El Salvador, luego de que su retiro fuera criticado por la sociedad salvadoreña por intentar destruir la memoria histórica de El Salvador. La lluvia de críticas en redes sociales cuando cambiaron la pintura mural fue realmente fuerte, al punto que un congresista estadounidense salió a cuestionar esta acción del gobierno por lo que el presidente dijo que “El salvador es una nación soberana y exhibiremos nuestras obras de arte donde nos parezca”.

La pintura mural de Monseñor Romero se encuentra ahora en el museo de arte del aeropuerto. Podemos ver esto como un ejemplo de cómo el gobierno trata de borrar nuestra memoria histórica, pero si la gente está unida y fuerte y también exige que estas piezas de la historia sean protegidas, entonces la presión puede hacer una diferencia y nuestras demandas pueden ser escuchadas por aquellos que tienen el poder de cambiar tales decisiones.
