The Suchitoto 14:  Since July 2 2007, this case has expanded beyond physical human rights abuses and unjust terrorism charges to encompass underlying questions of freedom of organization in El Salvador.  On February 19th the Suchitoto 14 were cleared of charges, setting an important precedent that defends the constitutional rights to free expression and association in El Salvador.

On April 16th a Cojutepeque appeals court rejected the government prosecution’s appeal of that decision, and the Suchitoto 14 were finally freed of all charges, although one of the 14 continues to be classified as on probation.  Recently Hector Ventura, one of the Suchitoto 14 was assassinated near Suchitoto, in what some fear could be a politically motivated killing.  Learn more

The struggle for Human Rights in El Salvador is far from over, and the Anti-terrorism law is still in effect, and the Legislative Assembly is discusses passing new reforms that would threaten liberties.
